Fate vs Choice

I do not believe that fate has control over our lives. Your choices are what determine your path in life. When something happens to you, good or bad, it is not fate that puts you in that situation, it is the choices that you have made throughout your life that lead you there. I believe it is true that if you do good things that good things will happen to you, but this is because you have put yourself in a position that others see you as worthy or deserving of a promotion or whatever gift it may be. Same goes for those who are bad. If you are an arrogant and mean person, who thinks you are better than everyone else just because you have more money or a higher IQ and all your life you have rubbed that in other's faces, people will see this and not be as likely to help you when you are in a bad spot and need help. This is why I believe you make your own path. Your final destination in life is not by fate, but because of the choices you make all throughout your life.

As for Oedipus his life is sealed by fate due to the author of his story. Oedipus does not have any choice in his life and is to follow one path and one path only. This helps tell his story and show the moral that the author wants to show. For the Greeks there was no question wether life was controlled by fate or choice. For them the Gods had already designated what they were to do with their life no matter what they or others did to try and change that. Oedipus was thought to be killed when he was a child so that his fate, which was to kill his father and marry his mother, would not be fulfilled. Oedipus ultimately fulfills his fate and his story goes to show that what he Gods determine for you will never be stopped.
