I believe that life is made up of a series of choices, not just what fate has planned for us. I believe that chance exists, but not fate. Sometimes things happen just by chance, but this is caused by a series of little choices that brought that person to be in the right place at the right time to put them in the position of being subjected to that 'chance'. In this way, every person is in complete control of their lives. I do not think that our lives are planned out for us the day we are born.
When people leave everything to 'fate', it is easy to sit back and let things happen to them. Then, when things do not go the 'right' way, people often blame it on fate. In reality, it was just a series of choices that carried that person to a result and this result may not have been the one they wanted. It was chance that gave them the wrong result, even if they did everything to bring about the right result.
Oedipus had his life planned out for him when he was born. I believe he is completely fated in the play, but only because he is a fictional character. The misfortunes in his life were not his fault because he did nothing to deserve them. Although, It is possible that everything happened to him just by chance. In writing, the author can create any situation they want. For this reason, fate does exist in "Oedipus Rex" because the author created it.
