Everything in we do in life involves a choice, and I believe that I am in control of making the decisions I need to make to live my life. I do not believe that my life is fated, and for me to be responsible and stay on top of everything, I need to make choices. If I was to sit around and not take control of my life, then in my opinion there would be no fate to govern me or my decisions at all. I do believe, however, that if one makes choices consistently and remains in control of their life, then fate can take a little bit of control and find it's way into one's life. This cannot happen until one is completely in control of their choices and decisions. So in my opinion, fate does not play a role in one's life unless choices are being made on a consistent level.
Having said that, Oedipus does have control over his fate. He has all the right tools to make the right choices and decisions, but he does not figure it out or see what is staring him right in the face. Even if he is not in the ideal position to be in control over his dismal fate, I believe he does have the right situation to deal with his terrible problems. However, he eventually does not figure it out and by the play's end, he cannot take what he has done, and it ends badly for him as well. Oedipus had not necessarily been making the right choices for the duration of the play, which is disappointing because I believe he had an opportunity at choosing his fate.
