I believe in the quote, "To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man" that Hamlet is trying to say that before being true to anyone else in the world you must first be true to yourself. If you don't believe in yourself then nothing else will matter. If you have confidence in yourself then others will have confidence in you and therefore will trust in your judgment. If you are being truthful to yourself then there is no way you can be false to others.
Hamlet suffers from self doubt during this play and so this quote is probably a way to prove to himself that if he isn't confident in himself then how can the people be confident in him? Therefore he must stay truthful to what he believes or else everything he worked for will be lost.
