"To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man" is among the many quotable quotes from Hamlet. The quote itself is pretty straight forward. Shakespeare is saying that to be respectable and trustworthy to others a person must be true to themselves even if it is a hard choice or action. Hamlet is faced with this dalima, he knows that his father was killed by his uncle. He wishes to seek revenge on is uncle but is unsure of his actions, he believes that he may be as crazy as everyone around him believes.
Everyone at some point in their life will face a hard choice where it would just be easier to go with the crowd instead of standing up for what they believe in. Society would still be stuck in the stone age if no one stood up for anything or changed the way things were. Were would the U.S be if Patrick Henry had not stated "Give me liberty or give me death", or Rosa Parks had not stood up on that bus and for blacks rights. When people are true to themselves even in small ways they stand out and can change everything.
