In The Metamorphosis Kafka relates to the statement "the majority of men live quite desperate lives". For one Gregor is very much part of the majority of man kind and he is miserable because of not just the fact of how he fits into the insignificant majority, but that his only purpose from his family is to provide financially. Secondly, Gregor becomes an insect, that like him lives out a rather hopeless life with only one instinctive purpose. Furthermore the insect realizes how miserable his life was now that he learns his only purpose with his family.
