Gregor's Life

Throught The Metamorphosis Gregor's earlier life is described as completely average. He was a reluctant traveling salesman for five years and other than a plan to put his sister through a music school, he had not ever done anything interesting. Anything he did was done solely for his family; which may not sound horrible but this excludes himself. In spite of the extreme situation Gregore finfs himself in, his whole focus is on getting to work or explaining himself to his boss. His stste of mind only worsens after being imprisoned in hisroom for several months. He beggins to starve himself and it is here that we can see Gregor giving up hope. In losing his ability to work, he has lost his ability to be usefull to his family. And now with Gregor's two major crutches gone, he has no choice but to accept his life of quiet desperation and die alone in his room. From the very beggining he was quietly unhappy with his life, and in the end he dies without hope of ever fulfilling it. Henry David Thoreau says that "the mass of men lead lives of quiet despeation," and Gregor is the perfect example. Without a simple aspiration for himself he walks through life merely to get through it; never finding happiness.
