Werther Analysis
In my opinion Werther suffered from depression, general anxiety and obsessive tendencies. He demonstrates these traits mostly when concerned with Lotte. The anxiety is apparent since he is unable to express his true feelings to Lotte and confront her about the "relationship" and her feelings toward him. He is only able to do this towards the end of his life, but it should have been done early in relationship so that no assumptions could have been made and Werther may still be alive. His obsession with Lotte was due to the fact that he was isolated in the town and the only contact, with those that could have helped him and knew him best, was through slow response letters that could not affect the current problems he was facing. Throughout his whole life depression is present in his psyche. His other two mental disorders only compound this. His depression comes to a peak when Lotte disowns him and he is left with nothing and only his decaying psyche to work with. His suicide is the result of his mental conditions and I believe could have been prevented had he traveled with a companion of close relation.
