Sula
Nel comes to a self-realization during this passage in Sula. Nel is realizing that she does not have to be like the rest of the women in her family and that she can be great. Nel sees that she does not have to live in the slums and be a prostitute, that she is a great person who is worthy of a good life. She also does not want her daughter to be like her mother and hides her mother's true identity from her daughter.
